January 2025 Roundup Related to GME Titles, Artists, and Colleagues

Today we recap screenings, events, and celebrations from January, in New York City and beyond, related to GME titles, artists, and colleagues. In the first half of the month, a number of films that GME distributes to universities in North America were programmed at Anthology Film Archives. In the latter half of the month, GME highlighted the work of photographers Raimondo Borea, Hugh Bell, and Jack Mitchell. Specifically, Borea and Bell’s oeuvres were highlighted with the release of GME's New Photo Licensing Reel, and Mitchell’s 1963 portraits of dancer Maria Tallchief were revisited ahead of the New York City Ballet’s celebration of Tallchief’s centennial. Additionally, Mitchell’s 1994 images of Paul Taylor dancing with Mikhail Baryshnikov were presented in a new video, in recognition of the Jerome Robbins Dance Division’s 2025 Dance Symposium celebrating Baryshnikov and his legacy.

GME Presents Austrian Films and Filmmakers, On the Occasion of "YES & NO: Austrian Artist Film @ ICA London"

On November 5th and 12th, YES & NO Magazine celebrated their 13th edition YES & NO Kino+Film Austria, which sheds light on more than 100 years of Austrian cinema by presenting a two-part program with the ICA and sixpackfilm. GME distributes several of these films as DVDs and DSL/DVD bundles, in collaboration with Index Edition/sixpackfilm, to the North American institutional market.

Notes after Long Silence - On Austrian and American Structural Film at Millennium Film Workshop

In the early 1960s, a number of filmmakers emerged in the United States and Europe to produce remarkable films that challenged any previous formal tendency in avant-garde filmmaking. The Structuralist filmmakers—including Peter Kubelka, Tony Conrad, Paul Sharits, and Kurt Kren––arranged their shots according to mathematical principles, attempting to produce non-narrative and non-illusionist films to oppose the cinematicapparatus. Similar to the advent of Minimalism in painting and sculpture, structural films insisted on shape, and their content was minimal and subsidiary to the outline.
