Today we recap the numerous screenings, events, and celebrations from October — in New York City and beyond — related to GME titles, artists, and colleagues. Notably, GME President Jon Gartenberg collaborated with Elena Rossi-Snook to curate a program of films dealing with sex and censorship that screened at the New York Public Library. Additionally, a number of titles that GME distributes to North American universities appeared in screenings mounted by several noteworthy institutions last month, including the Harvard Film Archive, Metrograph, Light Industry, and the Film-Makers’ Cooperative.

Naughty Films at the Library: Avant-Garde Works in the NYPL's Reserve Film and Video Collection

Thursday, September 19th, at 5:30pm at the Bruno Walter Auditorium in the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. Curator Jon Gartenberg, in collaboration with NYPL Film Collection Specialist Elena Rossi-Snook, will present a program of avant-garde films from the Library's Reserve Film and Video Collection that deals with sex and censorship. After the screening, Gartenberg and Rossi-Snook will discuss the history and interpretation of these rarely-screened works. This event is free to attend and can be RSVPed here.

May 2024 Roundup Related to GME Titles, Artists, and Colleagues

It’s finally June, and with the start of summer officially just around the corner, here is a recap of screenings, events, and celebrations from May, in New York City and beyond, related to GME’s multifaceted projects. Notable exhibition programs include a suite of films by Man Ray at Boston’s Brattle Theatre and a collaboration between the Film-Makers’ Cooperative and Film at Lincoln Center; both programs featured filmmakers and films GME distributes to universities in North America. Also in May, MoMA and Anthology Film Archives mounted retrospectives of the work of Warren Sonbert’s colleagues Nathaniel Dorsky and Jerome Hiler, both of whom GME featured in a compilation reel of clips from Sonbert’s films. Additionally, GME licensed three photographs from the Raimondo Borea collection for two books and a documentary film.

GME Distributes Work by Filmmakers Featured in the Film-Makers' Cooperative and Film at Lincoln Center's Series "Seeing the City: Avant-Garde Visions of New York"

From May 3rd to 7th, Film at Lincoln Center and the Film-Makers’ Cooperative mounted a 10-program series of films and video art titled Seeing the City: Avant-Garde Visions of New York from the Film-Makers’ Cooperative Collection and Beyond. Today is the final day of this series, which highlights works from within and outside of the FMC’s archive that chronicle New York City from a diverse array of perspectives. GME is proud to distribute, to the North American university market, titles by a number of filmmakers whose films appear in this series, such as Stan Brakhage, Holly Fisher, Marie Menken, Ian Hugo, Francis Thompson, and Rudy Burckhardt. GME distributes, as well, many other international city symphony films — not only of New York, but also San Francisco, Los Angeles, Berlin, Ostend, Granada, Lourdes, Cassis, Brussels, and elsewhere. Light Cone Presents the Third Edition of "Scratch Collection" Film Festival

Beginning on October 3rd of this year, Light Cone presented the third edition of their film festival Scratch Collection. GME has a long-standing relationship with Light Cone. While working as a film curator at the Museum of Modern Art, Jon Gartenberg sat in on screenings when the company was being formed in 1982 in Yann Beauvais and Miles McKane’s apartment. Later, Gartenberg acquired films of Beauvais’ for MoMA’s permanent collection. We are currently working with Emmanuel Lefrant, the director of Light Cone, to distribute the international touring program of films by Warren Sonbert.

Warren Sonbert's FRIENDLY WITNESS Screens at NYU

On Friday, September 22nd, 2023, at 7pm, Warren Sonbert’s 1989 “musical montage” film FRIENDLY WITNESS will screen at New York University, at 721 Broadway Room 674, as part of Moving Image Archiving and Preservation (MIAP) student Andrew Reichel’s program Three by Three by Three Hundred: Rare 16mm Films. GME represents the work and legacy of Warren Sonbert, and currently distributes five of his films as DSL downloads: AMPHETAMINE (1966), THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL (1967), HALL OF MIRRORS (1966), THE TENTH LEGION (1967), and WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO? (1966). FRIENDLY WITNESS, along with the rest of Sonbert’s montage films, will become available for institutional acquisition and rental through GME in the near future.
