LGBTQ+ Films and Filmmakers

Beginning in the 1980s, Queer Studies became popular in academic curricula and has resulted, over the ensuing decades, in a body of literature about films and filmmakers viewed through this lens. In honor of LGBTQ+ History Month, GME highlights an array of moving image works that we distribute (both classic and contemporary) by LGBTQ+ artists and/or about topics and themes relevant to the LGBTQ+ community. These works are available to academic institutions in North America, and are distributed in collaboration withIndex Edition, Re:Voir Video, Flicker Alley, MētisPresses, Kino Lorber, and Edition Filmmuseum.

September 2024 Roundup Related to GME Titles, Artists, and Colleagues

Today we recap the numerous screenings, events, and celebrations from October — in New York City and beyond — related to GME titles, artists, and colleagues. Notably, GME President Jon Gartenberg collaborated with Elena Rossi-Snook to curate a program of films dealing with sex and censorship that screened at the New York Public Library. Additionally, a number of titles that GME distributes to North American universities appeared in screenings mounted by several noteworthy institutions last month, including the Harvard Film Archive, Metrograph, Light Industry, and the Film-Makers’ Cooperative.

Happy Winter from Gartenberg Media Enterprises! Today, we’re reflecting on screenings, events, and celebrations from January, in New York City and beyond, related to GME colleagues, as well as films and/or filmmakers in our collection that we distribute to the North American university market. Notably, Anthology Film Archives screened a number of titles (by esteemed filmmakers like Sergei Eisenstein and Carl Th. Dreyer) that we currently distribute. Additional screenings of work related to GME and our colleagues appeared at various venues around the globe — ranging from august organizations like the International Film Festival of Rotterdam and The Film-Makers’ Cooperative, to exciting newer festivals like Animation First and Film Diary NYC.

GME Distributes Films by Sergei Eisenstein, Which Play in Anthology Film Archives' Essential Cinema Screenings for January

As part of their Essential Cinema series, a collection of films screened on a repertory basis, Anthology Film Archives will show five works by Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein from January 13th to January 24th. GME is proud to distribute three Eisenstein titles to the North American university market — BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN (1926/1930), OCTOBER (1928), and OLD AND NEW (1929) — all of which are featured in Anthology’s program.

Letters by Warren Sonbert and Other Filmmakers Whose Works are Distributed by GME Included in "Correspondencias: Cartas Como Peliculas" Published by La Fabrica

In Correspondencias : Cartas como películas, many of these letters do not only reveal secret friendships (Louis Lumière and George Méliès), but also unknown collaborations (Orson Welles and Robert J. Flaherty) or projects, which without these letters would have remained undocumented (Maya Deren’s idea of making a film about the circus, Pasolini’s proposal to Jacques Tati to participate in Porcile); other letters mark the end of a collaboration (Marguerite Duras, proposing a script to Alain Resnais, who after being rejected, would go on to film it herself). Other correspondences asking for help at times of creative confusion (Paul Sharits to Stan Brakhage, Stan Brakhage to Hollis Frampton, Gregory Markopoulos to Stan Brakhage); they document major historical moments (the War in the case of F. W. Murnau or Robert J. Flaherty, the political situation in Indonesia, Italy or France in the case of Joris Ivens, Pasolini or Truffaut), they appear like the chronicles of a journey (S. M. Eisenstein, Chick Strand and Ron Rice from Mexico, Warren Sonbert from Morocco, Resnais from Hiroshima, Ivens from Australia, Peter Hutton from Germany, Murnau from Latvia, Allen Ginsberg from India) or even greet other poets (like the letters-gift from Eric Rohmer, Anne-Marie Miéville or Chris Marker).

As part of this developing venture, GME Streamline is pleased to remind interested professors and librarians of GME's curated collection of DVD publications from Edition Filmmuseum - Vienna, all of which we now make available as DVD/DSL bundles. The Austrian Film Museum in Vienna was founded in 1964 by Peter Konlechner (1936–2016) and film artist Peter Kubelka (b. 1934). From its outset, the principal aims of the institution were the high-quality preservation and public presentation of film, as well as reaffirming the two important roles of cinema in society: as the most important form of artistic expression in modernity and as the chief historiographical source of the 20th century.
