Happy November from Gartenberg Media Enterprises! As we head into the holiday season, we’re looking back at events, screenings, and celebrations from last month, in New York City and beyond, related to colleagues of GME as well as films and/or filmmakers in our collection. October’s events offered a unique selection of GME artists and friends, from Dominic Angerame and James Benning, to Jeff Preiss and Jerome Hiler, both of whom were collaborators of Warren Sonbert, whose body of work GME exclusively represents.

Alexandra Dean's Hedy Lamarr Documentary Plays at Metrograph November 10th & 11th

On Friday, November 10th, 2023, at 4:30pm, and Saturday, November 11th, 2023, at 2:15pm, Alexandra Dean’s 2017 documentary about actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr, titled BOMBSHELL: THE HEDY LAMARR STORY, will play at Metrograph. Dean will be in attendance at the November 11th screening for an introduction and Q&A session. GME distributes BOMBSHELL: THE HEDY LAMARR STORY to the North American university market on Blu-Ray, DVD, and DSL.

Two Soviet films (THE FALL OF THE ROMANOV DYNASTY and THE MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA) that GME distributes to the North American university market are playing at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in November.

GME Remembers Pioneering Activist, Author, and Film Historian Vito Russo This LGBTQ+ History Month

Vito Russo may be best known today as the author of the seminal book THE CELLULOID CLOSET, which examines the history of depictions of homosexuality in Hollywood films. Russo, however, had a long career as a film historian, archivist, and activist. GME President Jon Gartenberg worked with Russo at MoMA, and later appeared in the 2011 HBO documentary about his life, titled VITO. Gartenberg recalls: “What struck me about Vito was that he appeared to be completely comfortable in his own skin, which undoubtedly enabled him to be at the forefront of gay activism.”

New James Benning Documentary Playing at NYFF

On Sunday, October 8th, and Monday, October 9th, 2023, James Benning’s new film ALLENSWORTH will screen at the New York Film Festival in the Currents section. Benning remains one of our most significant, formalist avant-garde filmmakers, and GME is proud to be the sole distributor of his films to the North American university market. Eduardo Darino Retrospective Playing at the Film-Makers' Cooperative

Eight films by legendary filmmaker and animator Eduardo Darino will play at the Film-Makers’ Cooperative on Friday, September 29th, at 7pm, to celebrate Darino’s six-decade career. GME associate Matt McKinzie curated and will present this program. GME highlights the work of Darino’s contemporaries, similarly groundbreaking Latin American moving image artists, in the must-have collection CINE A CONTRACORRIENTE: A JOURNEY THROUGH THE OTHER LATIN AMERICAN CINEMA.

A father films his daughter every year on her birthday, asking the same questions. In a mere 29 minutes we see a girl go from a toddler to a young woman with all the beautiful and awkward stages in between while the father/daughter relationship evolves in all its complexities.

FRAGMENTS OF PARADISE is a story about finding beauty amidst profound loss, a story of a man who was also the most significant force behind the evolution and promotion of the American Avant-Garde film movement, and who tried to make sense of it all…with a camera. GME licensed numerous clips of Mekas filming with his camera from Gideon Bachmann's UNDERGROUND NEW YORK (1968), a rare behind-the-scenes view of the exploding New York “underground” in the late sixties, a turbulent time and place that was to change American culture forever.

GME Gem 20: HENRI STORCK - SCENES OF SUMMER BY THE SEA

Henri Storck (Ostend 1907 - Brussels 1999) lived through the whole history of cinema, passing from silent to sound, and from experimental to lyrical documentary. He is recognised as a pioneer of Belgian cinema and a key figure in documentary. An eyewitness of his times, he made socially engaged films, but also poetic and experimental short films, films on art and a fiction feature. His body of work consists of 70 films, including a series of accounts, presented on this Blue-ray/DVD edition, on his native city of Ostend of which he was the chronicler and which remained, for him, the Queen of beaches.

GME Presents Films by 2021 Oscar Nominee Jay Rosenblatt on DVD and for DSL Download

GME Streamline is excited to announce the release of two volumes of short films by internationally recognized artist Jay Rosenblatt, now available as standalone DVD editions as well as collections of DSL downloads, all available for our North American university clientele. Rosenblatt has been working as an independent filmmaker since 1980. His films have been shown worldwide, in film festivals, museum retrospectives, and on television, and have garnered many awards. His most recent movie, WHEN WE WERE BULLIES (2021), was nominated for an Academy Award.
