In recent years, the work of filmmaker Warren Sonbert has experienced a renaissance among film critics, scholars, cinephiles, and the general public. Sonbert’s films have proven especially popular with younger audiences around the globe who are discovering his work for the first time.

Notably, GME celebrated Women’s History Month by spotlighting works by women filmmakers that we distribute on DSL, DVD, and Blu-Ray. In the Adrienne Mancia Streaming Room, GME streamed Hiroshi Teshigahara's WOMAN IN THE DUNES (which Mancia wrote about at length in Film Comment) and featured a number of rare archival treasures from Mancia's papers. Additionally, MIX NYC publicly shared the filmed Q&A session from their festival's closing night program in November 2024, which featured remarks from GME President Jon Gartenberg, commenting on GME associate Matt McKinzie's film and the other films in the program. At the end of the month, Gartenberg contributed program notes for Abigail Child's screening of her film THE SUBURBAN TRILOGY at the Film-Makers' Cooperative.
Read MoreOn Friday, March 28th, filmmaker and poet Abigail Child presented her feature-length cinematic triptych THE SUBURBAN TRILOGY at the Film-Makers’ Cooperative, of which she is a longtime member. THE SUBURBAN TRILOGY is comprised of three films Child created over the span of a decade: CAKE AND STEAK (2004), THE FUTURE IS BEHIND YOU (2004), and SURF AND TURF (2008—11). Child describes the trilogy as “prismatic” and being “about girlhood and the immigrant dream, focusing on post-WWII North American suburbs and… the war in Europe, critically seen through the lens of gender, property and myths of nation.” GME President Jon Gartenberg is a longtime friend and collaborator of Child’s and has programmed her work at film festivals internationally, including THE SUBURBAN TRILOGY, which was screened at the Pesaro Film Festival. Additionally, a number of titles that GME distributes to North American universities appeared in screenings mounted by several noteworthy institutions last month, including the Harvard Film Archive, Metrograph, Light Industry, and the Film-Makers’ Cooperative.
Read MoreOn Friday, August 30th, at 7:30pm, Warren Sonbert’s first two films AMPHETAMINE (1966) and WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO? (1966) will screen at Spectacle Theater (124 S. 3rd St.) in the program The Motown Sound and the Queer Underground, curated by GME associate Matt McKinzie as part of the series Sonic Visions: Experiments in Cinema and Music, presented by the Film-Makers’ Cooperative. Sonbert’s Estate has previously named GME as the custodian of his legacy, and since the artist’s untimely passing, GME has worked on an extensive project to preserve, distribute, and curate career retrospectives of his films on an international basis, as well as publish original documents from the paper archive of his writings.

The program featured Steve Bilich’s NATIVE NEW YORKER (2005) and Jem Cohen’s NYC WEIGHTS AND MEASURES (2006) digitally, and Jack Waters’ BERLIN/NY (1984), Abigail Child’s B/SIDE (1996), and Jim Hubbard’s ELEGY IN THE STREETS (1989) on 16mm. Read MoreIt’s finally June, and with the start of summer officially just around the corner, here is a recap of screenings, events, and celebrations from May, in New York City and beyond, related to GME’s multifaceted projects. Notable exhibition programs include a suite of films by Man Ray at Boston’s Brattle Theatre and a collaboration between the Film-Makers’ Cooperative and Film at Lincoln Center; both programs featured filmmakers and films GME distributes to universities in North America. Also in May, MoMA and Anthology Film Archives mounted retrospectives of the work of Warren Sonbert’s colleagues Nathaniel Dorsky and Jerome Hiler, both of whom GME featured in a compilation reel of clips from Sonbert’s films. Additionally, GME licensed three photographs from the Raimondo Borea collection for two books and a documentary film.
Read MoreOn June 7th, at 7pm, experimental filmmaker and former Executive Director of Canyon Cinema, Dominic Angerame, will present a program of eight films catalogued by both Canyon and the Film-Makers’ Cooperative, titled From West and East: Canyon Cinema Meets the Coop. Scholar and educator Kornelia Boczkowska co-curated the program with Angerame, which features two of Angerame’s recent films: LUMINAE (2023) and AEON (2024). GME is proud to distribute nine of Angerame’s city symphony films in the collection CITYSCAPES, which is available to the North American university market as both a DVD and DSL.
