November 2024 Roundup Related to GME Titles, Artists, and Colleagues
/Today we recap events and celebrations from November — in New York City and beyond — related to GME titles, artists, and colleagues. Notably, GME remembered Judith Jameson, and celebrated the Paul Taylor Dance Company’s season at Lincoln Center, with photographs by Jack Mitchell. GME also licensed footage from Martina Kudláček’s NOTES ON MARIE MENKEN (2006) for the launch of Artifacts, an online platform “connecting viewers with the cultural architects of the avant-garde, LGBTQ+, and underground arts.”
November 11th — CinéClub at Bar Laika
On Monday, November 11th, Jonas Mekas’ diary film WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN, featuring 16mm footage Mekas shot in the titular neighborhood in 1950 and 1972, screened at CinéClub at Bar Laika, which is an extension of e-flux Screening Room. The screening was introduced by Mekas’ son, Sebastian Mekas. GME distributes WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN in the collection JONAS MEKAS: THE MAJOR WORKS, which is available to North American academic institutions on DVD and DSL.
November 14th — GME
GME remembered celebrated dancer and choreographer Judith Jamison with photographs taken by Jack Mitchell that chronicled her role in the 1980 Broadway musical SOPHISTICATED LADIES. Jamison passed away on November 9th at the age of 81.
November 19th — Lincoln Center
Last month, the Paul Taylor Dance Company presented a series of dances at Lincoln Center under the artistic direction of Michael Novak. This series included two world premieres by resident choreographer Lauren Lovette, a world premiere by Robert Battle, and ten dances by founder Paul Taylor. To mark the occasion, GME presented a series of photographs of Taylor's dance company taken by Jack Mitchell, spanning the 1960s to the mid-1990s.
November 23rd — Quad Cinema
On November 23rd, QUEER DREAM TRIPTYCH, an experimental, found footage poem film by GME associate Matt McKinzie, was featured in MIX NYC: The New York Queer Experimental Film Festival at Quad Cinema. GME President Jon Gartenberg and GME Fine Arts Curator David Deitch were in attendance. During the Q&A session, Gartenberg commended the filmmakers for their bravery in expressing their vulnerabilities and externalizing their interior trauma in the fabric of their films.
November 25th — Anthology Film Archives
Artifacts, an online platform “connecting viewers with the cultural architects of the avant-garde, LGBTQ+, and underground arts and culture via intimate, long-form interviews,” launched at Anthology Film Archives on November 25th. For the event, GME licensed a clip from Martina Kudláček’s 2006 documentary NOTES ON MARIE MENKEN. The clip features rare and charming 16mm footage, rediscovered by Gerard Malanga, of Marie Menken and Andy Warhol engaging in a Bolex “duel.”
