Another Year, Another Oscar Nomination for Jay Rosenblatt

2023 ACADEMY AWARD® Nomination, Best Short Documentary

A father films his daughter every year on her birthday, asking the same questions. In a mere 29 minutes we see a girl go from a toddler to a young woman with all the beautiful and awkward stages in between while the father/daughter relationship evolves in all its complexities.

Jay Rosenblatt is an internationally recognized artist who has been working as an independent filmmaker since 1980 and has completed over thirty films. A maestro of found footage collage, his work explores our emotional and psychological cores. They are personal in their content yet universal in their appeal.

Gartenberg Media recently entered into a distribution agreement for 15 of the filmmaker’s works, assembled together as THE FILMS OF JAY ROSENBLATT VOLUME 1 and 2, available from GME Streamline as DSL downloadable files or on DVD. Once again we wish Jay all the best at the upcoming Oscars!

Jay Rosenblatt was previously nominated for the 2022 ACADEMY AWARD for best Short Documentary for WHEN WE WERE BULLIES, currently available on HBO Max and DIRECTV.

“Coincidence is God’s way of remaining anonymous”, Albert Einstein once said. WHEN WE WERE BULLIES begins with a mind boggling ‘coincidence’ which ultimately leads the filmmaker to track down his fifth grade class, and the class’ teacher, to see what they remember of a bullying incident from 50 years ago. In a playful yet poignant way, Rosenblatt begins to understand his complicity and the bully in all of us. Using a mix of collage, conversations with his former colleagues, the wisdom of his teacher, and his own slippery voice-over narration, Rosenblatt constructs a moving reflection on our own capacity to be destructive. WHEN WE WERE BULLIES is a humorous and gentle meditation on the banality of evil.
