Baryshnikov / Taylor, '94

Tomorrow, January 31st, the Jerome Robbins Dance Division will present its 2025 Dance Symposium at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. This year's Symposium will offer a day-long exploration of Mikhail Baryshnikov and his legacy, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his arrival to the United States from the Soviet Union. GME pays tribute to Baryshnikov with this suite of photographs taken by Jack Mitchell, which capture Baryshnikov dancing with Paul Taylor before performing with his dance company in October 1994.

As noted by Linda Murray, Curator of the Jerome Robbins Dance Division: "Last year, the fellowship focused on the Martha Graham archive for the centennial celebration of her dance company, and it proved a fruitful opportunity for researchers, artists, and dancers to explore Graham’s work more closely. This year, we’re thrilled to celebrate and explore the career of Mikhail Baryshnikov, an artist who has not only changed the trajectory of dance worldwide, but has been a great friend and supporter to the Dance Division." The Dance Symposium will consist of six presentations by a range of artists and scholars focusing on different themes of Baryshnikov’s work.

Over the course of his half century professional career, photographer Jack Mitchell chronicled a unique history of creators in the fields of dance, theatre, music, the fine arts, film, and television. The Estate of Jack Mitchell is exclusively represented by Gartenberg Media Enterprises, Inc. for placement of the archive and exhibition of his work.
