November 2023 Roundup Related to GME Titles, Artists, and Colleagues
/Happy Holidays from Gartenberg Media Enterprises! Now that it’s already December, we’re looking back at events, screenings, and celebrations from last month, in New York City and beyond, related to colleagues of GME, as well as films and/or filmmakers in our collection that we distribute to the North American university market. November’s events offered a unique selection of work by GME artists and associates, from Alexandra Dean and Nancy Buirski, to a number of fascinating titles featured in MoMA’s ongoing Adrienne Mancia tribute.
November 4th — Brooklyn Academy of Music
Two Soviet films — Esfir Shub’s THE FALL OF THE ROMANOV DYNASTY and Dziga Vertov’s THE MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA — which GME distributes to the North American university market, played at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in November.
November 7th — Luminor Theatre
From October 3rd to November 21st, Light Cone presented the third edition of their film festival Scratch Collection, “a journey through [their] catalogue of 6,500 films whose goal is to draw up a great world atlas of experimental cinema and reaffirm Light Cone as an evolving and thriving collection.” GME has a long-standing relationship with Light Cone. While working as a film curator at The Museum of Modern Art, Jon Gartenberg sat in on screenings when Light Cone was being formed in 1982 in Yann Beauvais and Miles McKane’s apartment. A number of filmmakers featured in this year's festival are distributed by GME.
November 10th — Metrograph
On Friday, November 10th, 2023, at 4:30pm, and Saturday, November 11th, 2023, at 2:15pm, Alexandra Dean’s 2017 documentary about actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr, titled BOMBSHELL: THE HEDY LAMARR STORY, played at Metrograph. Dean was in attendance at the November 11th screening for an introduction and Q&A session. GME distributes BOMBSHELL: THE HEDY LAMARR STORY to the North American university market on Blu-Ray, DVD, and DSL.
November 11th — The Film Foundation
Vittorio De Sica’s SHOESHINE (1946) played in The Film Foundation’s online screening room this month. Raimondo Borea’s photographs of the Boys’ Town of Italy in the early 1950s, which are exclusively represented by GME, are an ideal compliment to De Sica’s essential work of Italian neorealist cinema.
November 16th — GME
On the occasion of November being Native American Heritage Month, we reflected, on November 16th, on Steve Bilich’s 2005 film NATIVE NEW YORKER, which is exclusively available, worldwide, from GME, for acquisition and exhibition by cultural organizations, as well as for clip licensing by commercial productions.
November 24th — MoMA
On November 24th, 2023, at 1pm, GME President Jon Gartenberg introduced Jim McBride’s DAVID HOLZMAN’S DIARY (1967) at The Museum of Modern Art, as part of their Adrienne Mancia tribute, which runs from November through December 2023.
November 27th — Turner Classic Movies
On Tuesday, November 27th, 2023, Turner Classic Movies paid tribute to accomplished documentary filmmaker Nancy Buirski, who passed away earlier this year, on August 29th, 2023, at the age of 78. Gartenberg Media Enterprises was thrilled to collaborate with Buirski on her final film, the documentary DESPERATE SOULS, DARK CITY, AND THE LEGEND OF ‘MIDNIGHT COWBOY’. For the documentary, GME provided scenes from Jonas Mekas’ film REPORT FROM MILLBROOK (1965-1966) and SCENES FROM THE LIFE OF ANDY WARHOL (1990, from THE SIXTIES QUARTET, 1990-1999). TCM began their Buirski tribute at 8:00pm with a broadcast of DESPERATE SOULS.
November 29th — MoMA
On Wednesday, November 29th, 2023, at 1pm, GME President Jon Gartenberg introduced King Vidor’s THE JACK-KNIFE MAN (1920) and Henry King’s THE SEVENTH DAY (1922) at The Museum of Modern Art, as part of their Adrienne Mancia tribute, which runs from November through December 2023. Also on November 29th, at 6pm, Gartenberg presented Francis Ford Coppola’s directorial debut, the horror film DEMENTIA 13 (1963). In lieu of the original theatrical edit, MoMA screened Coppola’s Director’s Cut.

November 30th — GME
As November — or should we say Noirvember — came to a close, we reflected on our collection of noir titles on DVD, DSL, and/or Blu-Ray. From bona fide classics to long unheralded diamonds-in-the-rough, the pulpy, moody gems featured here are currently available for North American institutional acquisition from GME.
