VISIONS OF WARHOL presents images from the life of Andy Warhol, as seen by three pioneer avant-garde film-makers and close friends of the Pop-artist.
Jonas Mekas, the irrepressible force behind the promotion and preservation of experimental film, is also known for his rapid-fire diary films. Mekas documents giving Warhol the Film Culture Independent Film Award in AWARD PRESENTATION TO ANDY WARHOL.
In SCENES FROM THE LIFE OF ANDY WARHOL, Mekas chronicles not only the high priest of Pop Art, but also the social and cultural excitement that swirled around him, throbbing to a hypnotic Velvet Underground beat. The cast includes Lou Reed, Nico, Edie Sedgwick, Gerard Malanga, Allen Ginsberg, Ed Sanders, Barbara Rubin, Tuli Kupferberg, Peter Orlovsky, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, George Maciunas, Vincent Freemont, Henry Geldzhaler, Paul Morrissey, Karen Lerner, Jay Lerner, Peter Beard, Tina Radziwill, Caroline Kennedy, Mick Jagger and many others.
Willard Maas was husband of filmmaker, painter and actress Marie Menken, a couple whom Warhol called “the last of the great bohemians. They wrote and filmed and drank (their friends called them 'scholarly drunks') and were involved with all the modern poets." Maas’ ANDY WARHOL’S SILVER FLOTATIONS and Menkin’s ANDY WARHOL, have in common a lyric lightness and a love for jolting visual rhythms.
