VISIONARY: CONTEMPORARY SHORT DOCUMENTARIES
AND EXPERIMENTAL FILMS FROM AUSTRIA

“VISIONary sees itself as a communicator for innovative examples of contemporary Austrian audiovisual art, specifically short, experimental and documentary films and music videos. While these works represent some of the most interesting examples of contemporary Austrian art at present, they are rarely seen except at festivals and occasional performances. Thanks to financing provided by the Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture from a special budget for film-mediation activities, VISIONary, a retrospective and touring program was created in 2009. This DVD represents the culmination of this initiative and presents a selection of film works from 2007-2008.

The compilation reflects the enormous variety to be found among contemporary Austrian experimental film and video. The works on this DVD range from subjective to rigidly structural documentary approaches, from abstract music videos and conceptual architectural studies to elaborate computer animations. The amount of formal innovation manifest in all these works is outstanding. What the auteurs have in common is their own independent film grammar, an unmistakable style they have developed for themselves. Characteristic of the Austrian scene as a whole is a conscious, confident and thoughtful way of dealing with the audiovisual media employed. The interplay of sound and image is the main focus of attention, regardless of genre. This DVD offers an opportunity for a substantial view of Austrian experimental and documentary film’s varied status quo.”

– Michael Loebenstein & Norbert Pfaffenbichler, VISIONary Curators

"A number of the works have enjoyed success at international festivals, in this way helping to ensure that Austrian film culture’s innovativeness is not exhausted through tunnel vision, that it remains open to visionary ideas."
